What is a Legal Nurse Consultant?
Answers To your Questions
A legal nurse consultant is a registered nurse who will assist you in
discovering the secrets behind your client’s story/medical record. Through
years of medical record review and direct observation in the medical field, I
hold a unique perspective in understanding, interpreting, and educating others
to the often foreign world of medical issues. A LNC will organize and review
client records, conduct client interviews, research medical literature and
render informed opinions on the medical care received and the resultant
outcomes. I identify physician and nursing standards, where they have
deviated, what’s missing and what questions to ask to get the results you need.
I have never worked with a Legal Nurse Consultant before, what is the process?
You can call me or email to initiate contact. Initial consultation is always
FREE. We will discuss your needs on how I can assist you. Following our
discussion, a letter of agreement will be sent for your confirmation and
signature. Next, send copies of your client’s records, the signed letter of
agreement and a retainer check. Once I receive these, work will begin. All of
my work is time tracked for your convenience.
What if I’m not sure the case is worth my time and effort, and I want a M.D
review?
That’s the perfect time to use a LNC. Rather than waste your time and money
on more expensive medical review, Doctors will charge 3-4 times what I charge
for the same information, have less clinical experience and have zero
knowledge of nursing standards and guidelines that may have a huge impact
on your case, I guarantee to give you twice the review. You will find my
research and objectivity “spot on”, more extensive and to the point, and
definitely more cost effective than MD experts. So with a small upfront fee, I
will help you decide if this case is to your benefit. Make no mistake, Nurses
knowledge of what goes on in a Hospital environment is superior to a M.D.
What will it cost for an initial case review? What about other work product?
An initial case review can vary by the amount of records involved and the
complexity of the case. My reasonable hourly rate keeps your cost low.
Chronology, time lines, summarization of depositions, and opinion reports are
billed by the hour. I charge one hourly fee . I can't give you an expert opinion
without all the facts-and that would be for us to discuss the case and records at
no charge. I would be remiss in my duties to quote a case review without a
discussion of the facts of the case first.
When I decide I have a case, why do I need an LNC?
To continue saving money, a LNC will provide a simple and straightforward
review of your case: a chronology, time line, or nursing opinion report, entirely
for your benefit or to share with your expert witness. I provide the integration
of medicine, part of the road map through the complexity of your case. At your
request I locate appropriate MD or RN experts and will screen, interview and
collaborate with them. I will work with you in understanding what requests for
production and/or interrogatories will work to get the answers you need. I will
summarize deposition testimony to clear and simple concepts. I assist in
obtaining and/or creating the specific graphic presentations needed in
deposition, mediation, or trial. I attend independent medical exams and will
even go to trial with you.
Why should I hire a independent Legal Nurse Consultant?
There are many reasons to utilize an Independent Legal Nurse Consultant. First
off, I save you money, fees can be directly billed back to the client and I am far
cheaper than a M.D. I strengthen your case by my 23 years of medical
experience that includes an extensive clinical background, interpreting medical
records, documents and decades of contacts and resources. I have a gift for
expertise in knowing the standards of care in both medicine, nursing, HIPAA
and extrapolating them in to the litigation process.
Can you find me an expert and at what cost?
Yes, I will assist you in finding the appropriate MD or nurse expert for your
case. At times, I will ask for a review of the case to understand which type of
expert will be most advantageous. It may be as simple as a phone conference
to discuss the case or to obtain a copy of a hospital discharge summary note.
There are no hidden fee’s, I charge my normal hourly rate period. I do not
charge extra to find an expert. I use my own form sheets to ask the TE the
tough questions that need to be asked so you don't get any surprises in court
because the expert had lied or failed to leave something out of their credentials.
The Bottom Line
A Registered Nurse is an invaluable tool to the Attorney and Staff for
positive client outcomes as well as cost containment and return on
investment. Here are the reasons why:
1. Most Attorney's don't have the time and resources to educate
themselves and staff as to all the medical intricacies of the case- it's
time consuming and takes you and your staff away from focusing on
the legal issues of the case. Leaving the complex medical issues to
me will relieve this cost, wasted time and burden.
2. I bring 23 years of relevant "insider" Health Care experience to
every case. I integrate the whole picture together in a objective easy to
understand manner.
3. Attorney's are freed up to work the legal aspects while I research
and analyze the specific aspects of your medical cases.
4. Since I am an Independent contractor, you can utilize me to lighten
your load, assist in all medical related cases involving injury, death,
malpractice, toxic torts or any case where health care negligence is
involved.
5. You save money by not having to pay for an in-house consultant
with benefits thus keeping your costs low and utilizing me only on
cases involving the health care related claims.
